Course Description
This course explores the relationship between Japanese language and culture. Everyday communication strategies adopted by people in Japanese society will be examined in terms of Japanese language expressions, styles and structures. Linguistic approaches will be the principal analytical tools employed in this course but interdisciplinary approaches will also be adopted. This course is designed for students who are interested in knowing more about Japan but who have very limited or no knowledge of the Japanese language. Student will gain an understanding of the basic structure of the Japanese language, learn how usage of the language reflects Japanese culture and behavior, and explore how communication patterns of Japanese speakers differ from speakers of other languages.

Course Description
本課程以探討日語和日本文化之關係為主。課堂上會就日本人一些日常生活
的行動,嘗試透過觀察日語 (的構造) 去分析日本人的行為模式,為「究竟日本人
為何在『這』種情況下而作出『這』種行為?」一問找出答案。本課程專為不懂
日語或只略懂日語的同學而設,課程中所講授的課題均為常見的日本人行為模
式,透過本課程,同學將會對 (i) 日語的基本結構,(ii) 日語怎樣影響日本人的行
為模式有初歩的認識。
Assessment
小測驗 (Quiz): 40% (合共 2 次,每次 20%)
 課堂報告 (Essay): 10% (約 4 次但只計算成績最好的 2 次,每次 5%)
 期末報告 (Term-paper): 50%
