Course Description
This course is a compulsory course for all education majors, in which ELED and LSED students are assigned to the English session while other students are assigned to the Cantonese session taught by a different teacher. Education minors can choose whether to take the English or the Cantonese session freely. This course is also open to students from other faculties as a free elective. Educational theories, curriculum ideologies, pedagogical methodologies and some characteristics of the education system in Hong Kong are introduced.
Assessment
20% Class discussion and participation - attendance is taken every lesson and students are required to participate in online discussions with Canadian students in a transnational online discussion forum named WebKF (http://webkf.uoit.ca/login) (at least six postings throughout the term, discussion topics are announced in class)
40% Group assignment - an instructional design of a lesson for a specific subject and a specific grade, has to cater for multiculturalism and multiple intelligences (a description of the instructional design with reference to the theories taught, a detailed lesson plan and all lesson materials should be prepared, lesson materials must be either created or from Open Educational Resources)
40% Final Essay - analysis of a curriculum in Hong Kong with a clear theme using the theories taught (at least 1200 words, APA format should be adopted)
