Course Description
It is an elective course for students in the Faculty of Education while students from other faculties are also welcome to take the course. The course introduces the relationship between education and society in Hong Kong from a historical perspective, and development of the Hong Kong education system from late 19th century to 1990s is analyzed with respect to societal changes. Narrative research is also briefly introduced to prepare students for one of the assignments.
Assessment
40% Group presentation - students form groups of four to six, interview a person with unique experience illustrating changes of education and society in Hong Kong, conduct a 20-minute presentation to describe or narrate the story of the informant, and submit the audio recording of the interview along with PowerPoint slides for oral presentation

50% Individual term paper - students write an essay in about 300 words to describe their own educational experience in relation to education and society in Hong Kong, compare their own educational experience with that of the informant interviewed for the group presentation with respect to education and society in Hong Kong, and apply educationalists' analysis to illustrate the relationship between educational changes and social contexts in Hong Kong
