Course Description

This is a compulsory course for all students from the Faculty of Education and introduces students to current practices of special education in Hong Kong as well as definitions, characteristics, causes, diagnostic tools, and intervention strategies of five types of students with special educational needs: emotional and behavioural disorder, attention deficit and hyperactivity, autism and spectrum disorder, giftedness, and learning difficulties.

Assessment

30% Assignments - students complete five assignments related to the five different types of students with special educational needs before lectures about specific types of special educational needs by watching video clips related to that particular type of special educational need and answering some questions online

30% Tutorial presentation and discussion - students present a real case with a given special educational need in groups of six to eight and in 30 minutes by describing two specific difficulties encountered by the case, suggesting one possible solution to each difficulty, reflecting on the case, and leading a discussion on the case

40% Individual report - students write an essay describing an intervention program targeting on one specific domain (social, emotional, or cognitive) for a real / hypothetical case of student with special educational needs, a normal classroom, or a resource class (not more than 10 pages excluding references or appendices)

5% Bonus - students will be automatically awarded five marks after writing a reflection of not longer than 200 words on a movie named Taare Zameen in the discussion forum on the elearn platform before the last lesson of the course
