Course Description
This course is compulsory for ELED students while other students are not allowed to take the course. The course is the second of a series of three courses on English Language teaching techniques, introducing some key concepts of the instruction of listening (top-down, bottom-up) and speaking (communicative competence) as well as pedagogies that can be adopted in the three stages of listening instruction (pre-listening, while-listening, post-listening) and speaking instruction (awareness-raising, guided speaking, fluency).
Assessment
10% Reading response presentation - summarize and critically analyse an article related to the instruction of listening or speaking orally for 15 minutes in groups of 4-5
20% Lesson plan and learning materials - plan and prepare all the teaching and learning materials for a listening lesson lasting for 2-6 periods in pairs
20% Micro-teaching - demonstrate a part (20 minutes) of your planned lesson (each student teaches for 10 minutes) + present the background of your lesson for 2.5 minutes + orally reflect on your rehearsal / practice for 2.5 minutes
50% Term paper - write a literature-based paper on a self-designed theme related to the instruction of speaking or come up with a teaching idea on the instruction of speaking (2500 words at most)
