Course Description
This course is compulsory for ELED students while other students are not allowed to take this course. It is a continuation of ELTU 2202, horning the listening and speaking skills of students. Topics included in this course are speech analysis, reading aloud, critical listening, academic listening and discourse analysis.
Assessment
20% 2 Listening Tests - Test 1: bottom-up listening & top-down listening, Test 2: top-down listening & conversation analysis
20% Reading aloud - separate sentences, short story and poem (25 minutes for preparation and no time limit for assessment)
10% Speech analysis - a 6-minute individual presentation (with 1 question asked by the teacher to answer) on the organization pattern of and rhetorical devices used in a self-selected speech
20% Oral Presentation - a 10-minute individual presentation (followed by a 2-minute Q&A session) on how to make use of two self-selected authentic spoken texts (speeches are not allowed) to enhance the English listening and/or speaking competence of university freshmen from CMI secondary schools
20% Analysis of Spoken Texts - a written report (3-5 pages, 1.5 line spacing) of the oral presentation (focus more on the two spoken texts in the written report)
10% Attendance and Participation - attendance is not stressed but participation is more important
