Course Description
This course introduces some basic features of spoken English, including pronunciation, intonation, and sentence prominence, as well as skills of various types of oral communication, including impromptu speaking, group discussion, debate, and persuasive presentation.
Assessment
10% Reading aloud protocol - work in groups of 2-4 and read aloud a dramatic dialogue

20% 2 Impromptu speaking - present a given topic for 2 minutes with 30 seconds for preparation

15% Group discussion - work in groups of 4 and discuss a topic given in advance for 20 minutes

15% Debate - work in groups of 4 and debate with another group over a topic given in advance (each speaker speaks for 4 minutes with an addition 8 minutes of open discussion)

10% Presentation outline - work in pairs and complete an outline for the persuasive presentation using the template given

20% Persuasive presentation - work in pairs and present in 20 minutes including 5 minutes of Q&A based on the presentation outline

10% Participation and attendance - attend every class and participate actively in class activities

Course Description
This is a course designed to allow students with opportunities in having English Oral communications. Many of the students are from science and social science where they are assigned at least one ELTU course to complete degree requirement, with a few exceptions from other faculties.



It consists of various activities and some of them could be unfamiliar for students, including impromptu speaking and debates. Every lessons you are made speak and speak by involving in different activities.
Assessment
Students are assessed mainly during lessons in the activities; there are merely one to two pieces of work which you might have to finish outside the classroom.



For example, there were two impromptu speaking lessons, that students have their chance to speak on their own, and each counts 10% towards the total. Other activities do the same with varying weight.

This course is designed for students who want to improve their oral English communication skills. Specifically, it will focus on helping students handle various types of oral communication effectively. These will include interpersonal communication, various types of group communication, and public communication for informing and persuading. Coursework will include pair/group discussion, oral presentations and speaking improvement activities. This course is suitable for students with an intermediate level of oral proficiency or above.
