Course Description
This course is a compulsory course for ENGE and ELED students while other students have to seek for add consent from the department in order to be enrolled in the course. It provides an introduction of different aspects of linguistics, including features of language, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, language acquisition and sociolinguistics. Examples are mainly confined to the English language but examples from other languages (e.g. Cantonese, Putonghua, Japanese, French) are sometimes used for illustration.
Assessment
10% Attendance and Participation - attendance is taken every lecture and active participation online can be awarded extra marks

20% Assignment 1 - Short questions (data-based questions mainly related to morphology and syntax)

30% Assignment 2 - Short essay (maximum 1500 words excluding reference or 2000 words including reference, choose 1 question out of 5, questions are related to pragmatics, discourse analysis, language acquisition and sociolinguistics, APA format has to be adopted and at least 3 external references have to be included)

40% Final Examination - 2-hour centralized examination (morphological tree diagrams, comparisons and contrasts of linguistic terms, identification of grammatical functions, phrase structure rules, short essay)
