Course Description
This course is compulsory for ELED students while ENGE students can take it as an elective course. Students from other faculties are also welcome to take it whenever there are vacancies. Educational theories (e.g. Puritanism, environmentalism, romantic naturalism) and literary theories (e.g. romanticism, characterization, humour, plot development) are discussed with respect to excerpts (Aesop's Fables, The Pilgrim's Progress, A Little Pretty Pocket Book, Gulliver's Travel, Little Women) and full texts (The Secret Garden, Charlotte's Web, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) of children's literature.
Assessment
10% Participation - attendance is taken every lecture and tutorial and 1 mark will be deducted from the 10 marks for each absence

15% Presentation - conducted in tutorials, questions are provided in lectures but some tutors do not require students to exactly follow the questions

20% 4 short quizzes - 5 questions / 10 minute each (the quizzes are open-book but not open-notes and questions are about factual details of the required reading materials)

25% Term paper - choose 1 question out of 5 and write for 8-10 pages, citation and references are not required for the primary texts (required reading materials of the course)

30% Final Exam - 2 hours / 100 marks (50 marks - 10 short questions about required reading materials and lecture content, 50 marks - essay of at least 400 words)

Course Description
A course on children's literature, as the course title suggests.



A range of literary works will be studied, including Harry Potter, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan, the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, and also some Romantic poems. Fairy tales & other contemporary literary/critical works are also major topics.
