Course Description
This is a compulsory course for all ENGE and ELED students introducing students the fundamentals of English phonetics and phonology, including vowels, consonants, phonological rules, and suprasegmental features of speech.
Assessment
15% Class attendance and participation - attendance is taken every lecture and tutorial

15% Task 1 - students have to read aloud a list of words and write a 2-3-page report to analyze their own vowel pronunciation with reference to some online resources recommended by the professor as well as their own personal background

15% Task 2 - students have to read aloud a list of words and write a 2-3-page report to analyze their own consonant pronunciation with reference to some online resources recommended by the professor as well as their own personal background

15% Task 3 - students listen to recordings of the same text read aloud by ten different speakers and identify the accent as well as background of each speaker in the first and tenth weeks of the course respectively, construct a table showing differences in the two attempts, and write a 1-2-page analysis of the differences

40% Final project - students read a loud a sentence and a short text assigned by the professor, transcribe them phonetically, analyze their own pronunciation phonologically, and discuss their findings with reference to some online resources recommended by the professor as well as their own personal background
