Course Description
This is a compulsory and elective course for ELED and ENGE students respectively. The course is divided into two parts: the former part is related introduces different aspects of lexicology, including etymology, morphology, and lexical semantics, while the latter part discusses various issues related to vocabulary acquisition, including different components of word knowledge, semantic transfer, collocation, academic vocabulary, and vocabulary teaching strategies.
Assessment
10% Attendance / participation - attendance is taken every lecture and tutorial
20% Presentation - give an 8-minute presentation on the etymology of a Latin or Greet root, the morphological analysis of a complex word, a loan word, and a newly coined word in groups of 4-5
30% Quiz - 1 hour / 60 marks (8 short questions 5 marks each, 2 essays 10 marks each)
40% Essay - write an 8-page essay on a self-selected topic related to the course
