Course Description
This is an elective course as well as an introductory course on discourse analysis. Key analytical tools, such as conversation analysis, cohesive devices, speech acts, cooperative principle, computer-mediated discourse analysis, discourse-oriented online ethnography, intertextuality, critical discourse analysis, multimodal discourse analysis, and genre analysis, are introduced.
Assessment
10% Attendance and Participation - attendance is taken every lecture and tutorial, and students are expected to participate in tutorial discussions actively

10% Project Proposal - a proposal on a small-scale discourse-based research project in about five pages

10% Tutorial Presentation - a 20-minute presentation on an assigned journal article (summary, critical review, discussion)

30% Project Paper - a written report of a small-scale discourse-based research project in about 3000 words

40% In-Class Written Assessment - 5 multiple choice questions (5 marks) and 3 discourse analysis questions (35 marks) / 1.5 hours
