Course Description

Course Description
Using manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation) as a window, we will look into the formation and transformation of contemporary Japanese Society in the postwar era. Starting from a discussion of the major theoretical perspectives on the Japanese society, we will focus on salient aspects of social changes in contemporary Japan, with a particular focus on how these have been represented in manga, anime and related popular cultural products, including corporation, employment, politics, family, gender, education, youth, health, environment and foreign affairs. Our objectives are twofold, both to understand the significance of manga and anime in the Japanese society and to deepen our understanding of the Japanese society by locating the major themes and issues presented in manga and anime in a larger social, economic, political, cultural and historical contexts. An experiential learning approach will be adopted to relate students personal experiences in reading and consuming manga and anime to broader social issues in Japan.
