Course Description
This course is for ALL students preparing for careers in business. This particular course is offered by

the School of Hotel and Tourism and our aim is to help all business students develop strong writing

and speaking skills. The emphasis in Expository Business Writing is on creating clear, concise and

correct messages for audiences who are generally receptive, but busy. No matter what your career

path is, learning these skills is essential to your professional development and advancement. In fact,

The Wall Street Journal regularly prints articles on the fact that the #1 skill employers are looking for

is communication skills.

Assignments focus on documents students are most likely to use in the workplace soon after

graduation (e.g. letters, memoranda, and short oral and written reports). The course emphasizes a

direct pattern of organization with the main point (or thesis) towards the beginning as the most

suitable structure for the vast majority of business messages. Students are taught to use clear, concise,

correct, and unambiguous language and to avoid unnecessary jargon and inflated vocabulary.
