Various linguistic concepts such as design features of human languages, languages in the world, semantics, morphology, syntax, phonetics & phonology, language acquisition, language change, language variation and sociolinguistics are introduced.
Some concepts of sign languages are also discussed in class but not examined.Assessment
20% Group Project Report (on any linguistic-related topic) - can be submitted in Chinese or English, at least 10 pages
5% Group Project Presentation (a summary of the project) - can be conducted in Cantonese, Putonghua or English, 8 minutes presentation + 2 minutes Q&A
25% Mid-term Quiz (Multiple Choice, True and False, Short Questions) - 25 marks / 50 questions / 1 hour
50% Final examination (Multiple Choice, True and False, Short Questions, Long Questions) - 70 marks / 1 hour 45 minutes
2 marks are deducted for each absence in lectures/tutorials
2 marks are awarded for active participation in online discussion forum
