Course Description
This course introduces second language acquisition theories and research methods on a comprehensive basis with reference to a lot of empirical studies. Different approaches to second language acquisition, including the generative, input-emergentist, psycholinguistic, functional, sociocultural, and sociolinguistic perspectives, are covered.
Assessment
10% Assignment - a 5-minute videotaped presentation on a second language acquisition concept chosen from a given list
60% Three written quizzes - 50 minutes / 20 marks for each quiz (the first two quizzes assess students' understanding of definitions of key concepts and theoretical issues while the last quizzes assess students' analytical skills of second language learner data)
30% Term paper - a written report of a second language research conducted in groups of 2-3 (5000 words at most)
