This course introduces bilingualism at both individual and societal levels. At an individual level, bilingual acquisition, heritage bilingualism, and bilingual processing are discussed. At a societal level, language contact, language policy, and bilingual education are discussed.
Assessment
15% Two written assignments - two one-sided assignments reflecting on prior knowledge on bilingualism at the beginning of the course and changes in conception of bilingualism at the end of the course respectively
30% Midterm exam - 12 Multiple choice (2 marks each), 8 out of 12 Short questions (6 marks each), 2 out of 3 Long questions (14 marks each) / 1 hour 45 minutes
30% Term Project - a written report of a small-scale bilingual research project (5-8 pages for individual projects and 10-15 pages for pair projects)
15% Oral presentation - an oral presentation on proposal and preliminary findings of the term project (15 minutes including question and answer session)
10% Attendance - attendance in both lectures and tutorials
