Course Description
If music is to be found in every culture, acknowledgement of this fact does little to explain the complex ways in which music inhabits a culture. This class provides students with the opportunity to examine critically the ways in which music relates to cultures that differ in terms of place and time. To that end, the class is not organized around historical “style periods” or limited to any particular geographic region, but rather emphasizes a comparative approach that helps the student discover how their own assumptions about and understanding of music are culturally determined. The course will be organized around the study of music in relation to various socio-cultural frames: music and the domestic sphere, music and religion, music and politics.
