Course Description
The major purpose of this course is to introduce students a basic understanding of social problems and of social work as an integral part of social studies. As residents of urban society we are facing different impacts of social problems in our daily living such as disparity between the rich and the poor, crime and deviance, aging population, etc. Among the wide array of solutions to solve these social problems, social welfare and social workers are regarded as a sine qua non of the societal response to the social problems. In order to enhance our quality of living, it is necessary to understand the causal factors and nature of these social problems in order to identify the effective and evidence-based solutions.This course will cover the multiple perspectives of analyzing social problems, etiology, characteristics, historical contexts, theories of social problems and solutions. Concomitantly, this course will introduce social work and social welfare services as solutions to prevent and combat social problems in Hong Kong society.
