This course examines the role of music in film. It enables students with no training in music or media studies to better appreciate the art of film music. Through lectures and assignments that comprise viewing, listening, and reading, students explore the work of many composers and directors and gain skills to critically evaluate what they see and hear.

Course Description
Before mid-term, Thompson introduced some special terms to describe common techniques used in films with around 5~7 clips per lecture as examples. After mid-term, he moved on to collections of of different themes (eg sci-fic), then to particular directors (eg Tim Burton, Wong Ka Wai).
Assessment
Both mid-term and final consist of recognising film clips previously shown during lecture (can be reviewed online), and recalling as much as possible.
Term paper examining a clip from a film of choice (individually: 500words or in pair: 1000 words)
Presentation on the same clip, usually before submission of paper (optional, but compulsory if doing paper in pair)
Online discussion participation. (twice per term, all or none)
