The course invites you to investigate the problem of "humanity"—i.e., what it means to be human—at two levels: human as an individual and human as a social being. You will be engaged in a direct dialogue with literary writers, philosophers and social reformers who address three fundamental questions: What makes a good life for me? What makes a good society for everyone? How do I make possible such a good life and good society?
You are expected to read, discuss, and write about a wide range of texts extracted from influential classics in the humanities East and West. You will be encouraged to discover your own answers to the three questions by considering views and arguments expressed in the texts, and by exploring how far and in what ways such views and arguments may hold true for the modern world.
You will meet for one lecture and two tutorial sessions every week. Emphasis will be placed on your capacity to respond critically to the selected texts in oral and written presentations, in the form of class discussions, short write-ups and term papers. Class size will be limited to 25 students to maximize discussions and to facilitate intensive guidance on academic writing.

Economic ideas: marxism, wealth of nations
Lau Po Hei is famous for his good and inspiring lectures. Although attendance of lectures not counted, most of his students attend his lectures. Even many other students sit his lectures, making the lecture house not enough seats. Be prepared to answer questions in all his tutorials because he remembers your name and will point at you for answers. SUITABLE FOR THOSE WHO LIKE PHILOSOPHICAL THINKING, MAYBE TOO CHUR FOR THOSE WHO DON'T. Going through all readings are important in his tutorials. His grading system is transparent and basically will return all quizzes, RJs and term papers with marks and comments. However, there is 25% subjective "discussion" marks which a lot depends on his impression on you. You are deemed to get low marks if you don't actively participate. P.S. He may even take a little nap during your presentation.
Overall, a very nice and energetic teacher. The only reason I am giving an 8 but not a full mark for this course is because I don't like this subject UGFH anyway as a science student. I am not effective in representing myself to philosophical ideas especially while everyone who registered this course is very active and wants to answer questions a lot.Assessment

The course invites you to investigate the problem of "humanity"—what it means to be human—at two levels: human as an individual and human as a social being. We engage in direct dialogue with thinkers who address three fundamental questions: What is it that makes a "good" life for me? What is it that makes a "good" society for everyone? How do I make possible such a "good" life and "good" society?
You are expected to read, examine, discuss, and write about a wide range of influential classics in the humanities. You are encouraged to discover your own answers to the three questions by considering ideas in the texts, and by exploring how far and in what ways the ideas are relevant to our life today.
Reading assignments are intensive. Oral discussions extend and consolidate your reading experience. Written assignments are chances for deeper reflection. These are all learning processes emphasized in this course.

The course invites students to investigate the problem of "humanity"—i.e., what it means to be human—at two levels: human as an individual and human as a social being. Students will be engaged in a direct dialogue with literary writers, philosophers and social reformers who address three fundamental questions: What is it that makes a "good" life for me? What is it that makes a "good" society for everyone? How do I make possible such a "good" life and "good" society?
Students are expected to read, discuss, and write about a wide range of texts extracted from influential classics in the humanities East and West. They will be encouraged to discover their own answers to the three questions by considering views and arguments expressed in the texts, and by exploring how far and in what ways such views and arguments may hold true for the contemporary world.
Where appropriate, the selected classic texts will be given bilingually to help students enter the world of classics and develop confidence and competence in approaching primary texts. Students will meet for one lecture and two tutorial sessions every week. Emphasis will be placed on students’ capacity to respond critically to the selected texts in oral and written presentations, in the form of class discussions, short write-ups and term papers. Class size will be kept small to maximize discussions and to facilitate intensive guidance on academic writing, in Chinese and/or English as specified by the instructor.Assessment

The course invites students to investigate the problem of "humanity"—i.e., what it means to be human—at two levels: human as an individual and human as a social being. Students will be engaged in a direct dialogue with literary writers, philosophers and social reformers who address three fundamental questions: What is it that makes a "good" life for me? What is it that makes a "good" society for everyone? How do I make possible such a "good" life and "good" society?
Students are expected to read, discuss, and write about a wide range of texts extracted from influential classics in the humanities East and West. They will be encouraged to discover their own answers to the three questions by considering views and arguments expressed in the texts, and by exploring how far and in what ways such views and arguments may hold true for the contemporary world.
Where appropriate, the selected classic texts will be given bilingually to help students enter the world of classics and develop confidence and competence in approaching primary texts. Students will meet for one lecture and two tutorial sessions every week. Emphasis will be placed on students’ capacity to respond critically to the selected texts in oral and written presentations, in the form of class discussions, short write-ups and term papers. Class size will be kept small to maximize discussions and to facilitate intensive guidance on academic writing, in Chinese and/or English as specified by the instructor.

The course invites you to investigate the problem of "humanity"—i.e., what it means to be human—at two levels: human as an individual and human as a social being. You will be engaged in a direct dialogue with literary writers, philosophers and social reformers who address three fundamental questions: What makes a good life for me? What makes a good society for everyone? How do I make possible such a good life and good society?
You are expected to read, discuss, and write about a wide range of texts extracted from influential classics in the humanities East and West. You will be encouraged to discover your own answers to the three questions by considering views and arguments expressed in the texts, and by exploring how far and in what ways such views and arguments may hold true for the modern world.
